About
About the coalition
A growing coalition of companies seeking alternatives to deep-sea mining.
OUR MISSION
A business voice for the ocean
The Business Coalition for a Pause on Deep-Sea Mining brings together companies and financial institutions committed to one position: Deep-sea mining should not proceed until independent research has adequately assessed the risks and sustainable alternatives have been fully explored. Coalition members are sending a clear signal to markets, policymakers, and the International Seabed Authority that the private sector does not support this new extractive industry in the ocean.

Our purpose
Why this coalition exists
The ocean is worth more than just the value of its finite mineral resources. The long-term benefits of a healthy ocean — for climate regulation, biodiversity, fisheries, and human well-being — far outweigh any short-term incentives from deep-sea mining. The coalition unites its endorsers behind a single vision statement calling on governments to apply a precautionary pause.
Protect irreplaceable ecosystems
Safeguard one of Earth's largest ecosystems before mining causes irreversible damage and disrupts the vital services it provides.
Send a clear market signal
Companies don't want to be associated with this new extractive industry and the harm caused by deep-sea mining.
Support a circular economy
Advocating for a pause aligns with investment in circular economy strategies, such as recycling, urban mining, and material efficiency.
How we work
How the coalition works
Outreach
We engage companies across sectors — from automotive and technology to retail and finance — to drive them to join the coalition and sign the vision statement.
Example: direct outreach to energy, automotive and metals companies across Europe and North America.
Resources & Information
We provide endorsers with research, policy briefings, and expert analysis to help them build sustainable, circular solutions to minerals within their operations.
Example: policy briefings, scientific summaries, and circular economy briefing.
Advocacy & Communication
We offer communication opportunities for endorsers to elevate their voice and position against deep-sea mining, creating collective pressure on policymakers at the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and beyond.
Example: joint statements, ISA session participation, and media amplification for endorser companies.
